Interhack Shares Expertise at Northern Ohio InfraGard Chapter Meeting
Columbus, OH—Computer science expert Matthew Curtin discusses Incident Response case study at the quarterly meeting of the Northern Ohio Chapter of InfraGard on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 8:00 A.M. at the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) facility in Richfield, Ohio.
Curtin presents a case study examining how a $3 billion organization found a domain administrator account that appeared to be connected with a key $300 million project. When the leadership of that project did not know about the account, the organization's incident response team took action. In this case study Curtin considers how the organization used its internal and external resources to manage a response, analyzing log data, managing the spread of the backdoor with anti-malware tools, and analyzing dozens of machines forensically to find the person responsible for the privilege escalation.

Matt Curtin Is Featured Speaker for Open Source Club at OSU
Columbus, OH—C. Matthew Curtin is the featured speaker at the November 8, 2012 meeting of the OSU Open Source Club at 7:00 PM in Dreese Lab. He shares first hand experience as a forensic computer scientist with students, many from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Interhack Participates in ILTA Panel Discussion on Information Security in Law Firms
Columbus, OH—Interhack Founder C. Matthew Curtin joins representatives from information security providers and Ohio law firms to answer questions and discuss Data Security and Litigation Support. The panel is part of the statewide meeting of the Ohio Chapter of the International Legal Technology Association (ILTA) held on November 8, 2012 at AEP Ohio headquarters in Columbus.
At the end of 2011, more than 100 law firms had been targeted by hacking groups or had a data breach. The panel discusses the following questions.
- What makes firms potentially easy targets?
- How and where is ESI stored and transferred, and what are the vulnerable points?
- Are certain types of data particularly worthy of protection?
- What can and should firms and corporations do to protect their clients and data?

Interhack Grows Information Assurance Practice
Columbus, OH—Interhack is pleased to welcome Anil Sethi to it's Information Assurance practice. Anil joined Interhack in August 2011. As a Program Manager, he is primarily responsible for managing incident response programs for Interhack's enterprise clients.
Anil brings more than thirty years experience in incident response management to Interhack. He was Assistant Vice President for Risk Management and Information Security at Huntington National Bank in Columbus for over twenty-five years. While there, he developed and managed a multi-department incident response team and managed electronic discovery requests for identifying, preserving, and producing data.

Interhack Promotes Scientist Working on Big Data in Litigation
Chicago, IL—Interhack is pleased to announce that Lee Ayres has been promoted from Senior Analyst to Scientist. Much of Lee's recent work is used by counsel in several class action lawsuits where answers to underlying questions rests in complex data sets. Often called "big data," records range from billing to transactional data. In the absence of any existing software to analyze these data sets, Lee routinely writes custom software to provide accurate and complete answers to the questions at hand.

Regarding social media, Mason discusses the implications for evidence, how proper records for evidentiary purposes can be created, and what pitfalls should be avoided.
When forensic analysis of computer systems established that a former employee took a company's internal information for his use in joining a competing firm, he had little choice but to settle with his former employer and to abide by an order preventing him from talking to his former employer's customers. When he violated the court's order, social media showed it happening. This case study shows how social media can be an important source of information in investigations and enforcement.

How CIOs Can Prepare for Electronic Discovery

Lawsuits are a fact of corporate life. Understanding judicial thinking can assist in dealing with and planning for litigation.
- Plan for information management lifecycle. The more data that you have, the more it will cost to go through when you are involved in litigation or a government investigation. Include information disposal in your lifecycle plan in order to minimize the costs of dealing with legacy data.
- Build a response team. Get buy-in from IT, Legal and the Business Unit. Conduct a mock fire drill. Show people—don’t just tell them—what adverse consequences can result from poorly prepared or poorly planned information management practices.

Compromise in the Cloud
Columbus, OH—The Central Ohio Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) welcomes computer science expert and Interhack Founder Matt Curtin to speak at the association’s monthly chapter meeting on April 18, 2012. Curtin presents Compromise in the Cloud, a case study in responding to compromise of financial data in the cloud.
An organization looking to gain scalability, without bearing the massive expense of running the entirety of its e-commerce environment on in-house data centers, outsourced to a cloud provider. The organization’s compliance officer noticed that their site had “offshore pharmacy” links to it and that following them in turn bounced to another site. Internal attempts to remediate did not last.
Expert analysis ultimately determined that the content management system used for the store had a vulnerability in it that had been exploited, allowing the attackers to achieve root access to the cloud provider’s systems underneath the application. The software used to compromise the system was made up of heavily obfuscated code to search for, stage, and deliver payment card numbers back to the attacker in Moscow. Root cause analysis ultimately identified mismatches between the expectations of the organization and the cloud provider about responsibility for software management.

Mason Evans Brings Electronic Discovery Expertise to Interhack Corporation

Interhack Presents Case Study: Electronic Medical Records in Litigation
Columbus, OH—Computer science expert and Interhack Founder Matthew Curtin along with Greg Krabacher of Bricker & Eckler, LLP present Electronic Medical Records and Off Site Interface – Functional and Liability Concerns at the OSHRM 2012 Winter Conference on March 9th, 2012.
Curtin and Krabacher introduce a case study—litigation involving complex data, in this case electronic medical records. Will a printout of the record suffice? Is a production of the raw data necessary? How can searches be performed to the satisfaction of the court? Using the case study, Curtin and Krabacher walk the attendees step by step through the process by identifying these critical issues and working through them.

Columbus, OH—Interhack is pleased to welcome Joseph Re Jr. to the firm. Joe joined Interhack in March 2012. He is responsible for business development. Joe primarily focuses on matching the needs of corporate clients to Interhack’s expertise in the areas of information assurance and incident response.
Joe brings more than a decade of experience successfully generating revenue through the development of long-term client relationships centered on technology-based products and services. At Interhack, he helps clients to apply Interhack's deep technological expertise in programs to increase their capability to respond to data incidents defensibly.
Before joining Interhack, Joe made his career on Wall Street by joining Jefferies & Company’s nascent Investment Technology Group (ITG). As a Senior Vice President for Institutional Sales & Trading, Joe was primarily responsible for client relationship management. In that role, he worked to provide value to clients through products and services that were always designed and offered in a way that aligned the company's interests strictly with those of its clients.
