Matt Curtin to present to local Criminal Defense Lawyers Association

Matt Curtin to present to the Central Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (COACDL) February 27 on authenticating evidence to safeguard against faulty data.

Columbus, OH—Interhack founder Matt Curtin will be speaking to the Central Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (COACDL) on February 27. The topic of the presentation is based off of Mr. Curtin's publication “Integrity in Digital Evidence: Rendering Judgment on an Electronic Record.”  He'll be advising Criminal Defense Lawyers to authenticate their evidence to safeguard against faulty data.

Is there more than one way to read available information?

Adversarial analysis of the data can help to lead to a more complete understanding of available information. Do the data tell a story? Can the same data also tell another story? These questions are often more complex than prosecutors, defenders, judges, and juries may realize. An examiner's certainty may not be the same as a reasonable degree of scientific certainty. In the discussion, Mr. Curtin will highlight the kinds of questions that can help to understand the foundations and limits of conclusions offered through computer analysis.

About COACDL

The COACDL is part of a national association that encourages a rational and humane criminal justice policy—one that promotes fairness for all; due process for all accused of wrongdoing; compassion for witnesses and victims of crime; and just punishment for the guilty. Interhack to appear local news station to show dangers of public WiFi

Interhack founder Matt Curtin will appear with Adam Aaro on FOX28 news as a security expert exposing the potential dangers of public WiFi.

Columbus, OH—Interhack founder Matt Curtin will appear with Adam Aaro on FOX28 news as a security expert exposing the potential dangers of public WiFi. By a hotspot advertising free wifi, he'll show how attackers can view the users Internet activity to potentially steal usernames, passwords and other sensitive information.

As Curtin explained, “Using an untrusted network means potentially exposing information. The safest option is to connect only to networks that you know and whose operators you can trust. As a rule, end to end encryption like that used by Gmail provides protection from prying eyes. Even then you need to trust the party on the other side."

The demonstration was conducted in a controlled environment to avoid interception of sensitive information. Aaro connected to a system designed to intercept his traffic for the purpose of the story. Users who connected to the "Free WiFi" were not able to connect to the Internet and Curtin did not record any attempt to send session traffic.

Interhack Framework used for California Attorney General's Data Breach Report

California Attorney General released 2012 Data Breach Report using Interhack founder C. Matthew Curtin and visiting scientist Lee Ayres' taxonomy of data loss incidents.

Columbus, OH- On Monday July 1, the Attorney General from California released the 2012 Data Breach Report using Interhack founder C. Matthew Curtin and visiting scientist Lee Ayres' methodology of taxonomizing data loss.

taxonomy-fig.jpgThe Breach Report is used to gain an understanding of the types of incidents take place, what vulnerabilities are exposed, and what can be done in the future to halt or diminish the probability of future breaches. The Privacy Enforcement and Protection Unit, who put the report together, used Interhack's framework from Using Science to Combat Data Loss: Analyzing Breaches by Type and Industry to categorize the types fo failures that comprimised Califonians' personal information in the year 2012.

By using Interhack's method, the Attorney General's report clearly and repeatably classifies failures by proximate cause.  The study concluded that Logical failures, specifically from outsiders, were the most common failures and addressed it in the first two reccomendations to combat data breaches.

The Interhack Breach Taxonomy classification method was developed in 2007 by Lee Ayres and C. Matthew Curtin. It has been cited in the literature, including articles released by The University of Washington, Nova Southeastern University, and Emerald Group.

“We're delighted to see the taxonomy put to good use,” said Mr. Curtin. “Our objective has been to make a research tool that can be used for open and reliable analysis of data breach reports that will support both accuracy and precision. We believe that the approach produces more consistent results than work done with private datasets using classification methods that cannot be openly replicated.”
