Interhack Expands Technical Staff as Lynn Newton Comes Aboard
Interhack Corporation announced today that Lynn David Newton has joined the firm.
Before joining Interhack, Newton developed and maintained the convention management system at Gen Con in Seattle. Previously, he developed Linux kernel test software for embedded telecommunications hardware for Montavista Software in Tempe, Ariz. and served as the lead developer of the RegPro product at Registration Resources in West Linn, Ore. As a software engineer at Motorola, Newton created Test Case Matrix, an application to standardize test planning, tracking and reporting. He also created Automated Controller for Test Suites (ACTS), enabling the unattended running of tests in hours, which previously took months by hand. His career in technology began with Four Phase Systems, where he became a software engineer after working as an editor of technical documentation.
Before his career in technology, Newton worked as a professional musician. A classically trained composer, he also plays a variety of instruments, and founded the rock band, “Time,” which later recorded under the name “Think Dog!”
“Lynn's career path demonstrates a feature that we regard highly,” said Interhack founder Matt Curtin, “the ability to cultivate raw talent into a highly-developed skill that is then applied to address challenges in a variety of domains.”
Newton holds a degree from the University of Illinois. He and his wife Suzy are relocating to Columbus. Newton is an avid runner and has competed in many ultra-marathons and marathons.

Curtin Teaches Students Real-World Application of Forensic Computing and Cryptography
On November 16, Interhack founder Matt Curtin goes to Edison Community College in Piqua, Ohio, to conduct three sessions with students on topics dealing with forensic computing and cryptography.
Forensic Computing
Sometimes known as digital forensics, forensic computing is the process of analyzing data to answer specific questions for legal proceedings. In some cases, these lines of inquiry can be used to establish facts, to reconstruct information that might otherwise have been destroyed, or to offer expert opinion to the court about how to interpret certain technical facts. Matt will introduce students to an investigation conducted under his direction that identified how one company had critical information about its business stolen by an employee who was leaving the company to go to work for a competitor.
Cryptography
Cryptography is the practice of converting information in human readable form, called "cleartext," into unreadable coded format, called "ciphertext." Cryptography also concerns itself with the protection of of such information.
Since ancient Egypt, cryptography has been used by diplomats and armies to protect secrets. The twentieth century saw tremendous upheaval in the technology, moving away from mechanical to mathematical systems. Today, cryptography is used by organizations of all types to protect trade secrets, customer records, and other important information. In this session, Matt Curtin will walk students through the process of helping a large retailing company to identify sensitive customer information, and how to use cryptography to protect customers from identity theft and related fraud.

Electrons Are the New Paper

Abstract
Paper has endured as information technology for millennia, recording and preserving much of the foundation of our societies, and specifically our legal systems. The legal process has developed methods for making sense of information presented on paper documents. Much of the information we have available today, however, is electronic. Adjudication requires an understanding of the technology used to manage information. How is information stored, processed, and transmitted in the electronic information systems of today? How does the Internet support today's information management? What can be learned from forensic examination of information systems?
After dealing with the fundamentals of electronic information and computing technology, Curtin discusses applications from his own experience as a forensic computer scientist. The case studies serve to solidify the audience's understanding of the critical elements of electronic information, and to develop sound intuition on how to make sense of findings presented by experts and technical fact witnesses.

Abstract
If your company's attorneys had to represent to a court that your organization did not have a particular record, could they do so correctly and with confidence?
Corporate information technology (IT) departments are widely tasked with ensuring that information is always available when needed by the business. Requirements for integrity and confidentiality have driven additional changes in policy for information management and the mechanisms used to implement such policy. To a large degree, these matters have widely been considered "technology" issues, handled exclusively within the domain of IT management.
Risk, however, goes far beyond the matter of hostile actors breaking into systems with sensitive data. With legal, regulatory, and contractual issues binding the organization, a failure of effective information management poses considerable risks to the organization. The possibility of indictment of executives and firms, fines paid to regulators, and settlements paid to plaintiffs weigh on the consciousness of businesses of all types.
To illustrate how technologists and lawyers need to work together to identify and to manage risk in the organization, Matt Curtin will discuss his work as a forensic computer scientist and a case where his analysis led to findings contrary to assertions made by the company sued for violating the privacy of people using the Web. Attendees should understand the need for cooperation among disciplines in the organization and strategies for ensuring success.
