How Businesses Can Protect Themselves

The Central Ohio Better Business Bureau is presenting a Cybersecurity Month event at Highlights for Children in Columbus on October 17, 2019. Interhack founder C. Matthew Curtin will join the discussion.

Discussing security as just another example of asset management, Curtin prepares business owners to engage with the question fundamentally and not to be hung up on technical minutiae that can overwhelm business owners.

Businesses need to be protected against various types of losses, including theft of information and denial of service. Mere protection of the assets is not enough, however: at the end of the day the business needs to have been able to operate profitably if it is to survive, and so much more if the organization's goal is to do more than survive.

A reasonable engagement with the matter of security can provide critical affirmative defenses under Ohio law, and can be a far more effective way to identify and to manage risk than to chase after cheap one-time "fixes" that have a narrow impact and short shelf-life.
