NO SILVER BULLETS

It seems that everyone wants to find a silver bullet -- the One True Solution that will address all problems simultaneously.

There are no silver bullets.

Safety, security, stability, scalability, and every other "ity" that you can think of come as a result of correctness in design and implementation. Such correctness is the result of hard work, attention to detail, experience, and competence. That sounds straightforward enough, but a survey of the state of computing will show that correctness remains elusive for many.

Pressed by constraints on time and budget, managers are often forced to choose not the best option, but the least bad option.

Finding and maintaining staff with the experience and competence necessary is hard work. Many organizations can't really justify spending the kind of money that it would take to keep that kind of expertise on staff full time.
